Literacy in the Nek Language

Since Isolde Kappus (Germany) joined the Nek team in 2016, more literacy work has been done among the Nek people. The Nek Elementary teacher had the opportunity to join different workshops. One workshop – Vernacular Creative Phonics (VPE)- concerns a teaching method teachers can use to teach their pupils how to read and write in their language. During this workshop, the teacher creates their teaching materials, and they present a teaching lesson using the new method. Another is a material production workshop in which they write stories for different reading levels. The third workshop allows the teacher to learn another method to bridge the vernacular language to English.
